The funny thing is during the whole duration of no PR, the traffic has been increasing steadily, except for the days when the server went down...

Ask any SEO experts, they will tell you PR does matter but it is not everything. Some websites that are ranked number ONE in Google Search Result has PR 0. Getting organic search traffic is more important.
